Shared Central Theme: Quantitative morphology and data analysis in three dimensions

Duration: The evening of Tuesday 7/11 through the evening of Saturday, 7/22


Basic design:

Summer School in GMM: tutorial and special topics 7/11-15
(partially subsidized by the EU: EVAN Marie Curie Training Grant)

Symposium, invited lectures, 7/17 – 7/18 morning

Workshop on advanced topics (for tool builders), 7/18 afternoon– 7/22 evening
(partially subsidized by the Austrian Ministry of Ministry of Culture, Science and Education, and the Austrian Council for Science and Technology)



Approximate times on task:

  • Overview, 3 hours Wed 12
  • Lectures on tools, 9 hours, Thu 13– Sat 15mornings
  • Practicum, 10 hours Thu 13 through Sat 15 supervision
  • Free day Sun 16
  • Symposium invited sessions, 9 hours, Mon 17– Tue 18 morning, Keynote Mon evening
  • Workshop, advanced lectures and discussions, 15 hours Wed 19 – Fri 21
  • Participant presentations and Speculations, 6 hours, Sat 22
  • Social events, 5 evenings: before and after the summer school, before and for the symposium and after the workshop. Tue 11, Sun 16, Mon 17, Sat 22.


Topics of Summer School (sketched on the time chart)

Standard curriculum weighted to 3D data with some additional special topics such as Ecophenotypy/PLS, components of asymmetry, semilandmarks, and size shape space.

Application Information on the Vienna MorphoFest 2006


Application deadline: April 15, 2006

Please download and fill in the application form (ViennaMorphoFest.pdf), and submit it by email or fax to the coordinator. The number of participants is limited. Information on acceptance will be sent to you by May 1st.


Favorable prerequisites for participants

  • some training experience in multivariate biometrics or morphometrics
  • some competence in a statistical programming package (R, S, Matlab, …)
  • bring these with you: “a sincere desire to learn”, and a laptop (if no laptop, inform us in advance).

Estimated expenses (for participants)

  • Contribution towards running expenses (obligatory): ~ 10 EUR per diem (soft drinks, coffee, snacks)
  • Social program (optional): ~ 25 EUR per event
  • Accommodation per diem: single room ~ 60,-EUR/pp; double room ~ 40,- EUR/pp
  • Travel
  • Meals
